A History of Our Church
The First Assembly of God was begun in the early depression years in a tent meeting. The first pastors were two young ladies, Misses Granville and Lindsay. Services were held in a tabernacle located at Second and Main Streets, then in halls. A creamery building located at Fourth and Douglas became a semi-permanent home until a basement was built at First and Market in 1938. In 1946, the super-structure of the church was completed at First and Market, and this was the permanent home of the church during the next twelve years. In 1955, property was purchased at 50 Highway and Browning next to the Lee's Summit Senior High School. A building was begun under the leadership of Rev. James Smith in 1957. The old church was sold to the Nazarenes and in September of 1958, the congregation occupied the basement of the new building. Through the sacrifical giving and untiring work of all the people, it was possible to occupy the auditorium in April of 1960. The building was dedicated in 1961. The basement and balcony were completed in 1962, and in 1966, the congregation voted to build a large Sunday school annex to accommodate our growing church.
The church was begun as a Foursquare Gospel Church, but in May of 1932, was set inorder as an Assembly of God by the Rev. A. A. Wilson. One of the original charter members, Mrs. Gertrude Reed, is still a resident here and is actively serving the Lord. Other charter members are serving the Lord in various areas of our country.
